What Is ASH Muskoka?
ASH Muskoka is a project run by Friends of the Muskoka Watershed (FOTMW).
The idea: use wood ash (from residential wood stoves, fireplaces) to replenish calcium in Muskoka’s soils and lakes, which have been depleted over time (largely due to acid rain).
They collect clean, cold wood ash via community “ash drives.”
There’s also a citizen science component: homeowners can sign up to apply ash to trees on their property and monitor growth, canopy, calcium uptake, etc.
The science side involves Trent University, and their early results show significant increases in calcium (and other nutrients) in foliage — promising for healthier forests.
